Twin Intelligence Lab
Motivation
“A digital twin is a set of virtual information constructs that mimics the structure, context, and behavior of a natural, engineered, or social system (or system-of-systems), is dynamically updated with data from its physical twin, has a predictive capability, and informs decisions that realize value. The bidirectional interaction between the virtual and the physical is central to the digital twin.”

Twin Intelligence Lab Overview
- Our goal is to connect real systems, real data, and real-world impact.
- We work on problems where engineering and physical systems generate noisy, incomplete, and multimodal data, such as sensor signals, images, and complex geometric data.
Research Focus
- Multimodal data from sensors, images, and operational systems
- Machine learning and statistical modeling for noisy and imperfect real-world data
- Design of experiments, prediction, anomaly detection, and root-cause analysis
- Decision support for smart manufacturing and healthcare systems
Application Areas
- Smart manufacturing: 3D printing qualification, quality control, and process monitoring
- Smart healthcare: biosensing, monitoring, and treatment-planning support
- Embodied AI and robotics
Opportunities for Students
We welcome motivated students who enjoy:
- Hands-on experiments
- Data-driven problem solving
- Rigorous thinking
- Building solutions that work beyond the lab
Students may gain:
- Publishable research experience and practical technical skills
- Mentorship through collaborative projects
- Experience working with real datasets and advanced 3D printing/scanning equipment
- Opportunities to deploy methods on real-world engineering problems
